Theyyam

In North Malabar, divinity isn’t confined to temple sanctums—it lives among the people. Theyyam, for

them, is God (Daivam). More than a folk art, the Theyyam dance is a profound cultural symbol and

ancient tradition that celebrates the pride of North Malabar. When Theyyam embodies divine energy

and performs its rituals, it transcends caste boundaries, commanding reverence from all—Brahmin,

Nambiar, Thiyya, Malayan, Pulayan, or Vannan alike. It is both a sacred worship tradition and a vital

part of village life and cultural heritage.

The Theyyam season starts from the tenth day of the Malayalam month of Thulaam (usually mid October) and lasts until the middle of Edavam month (typically late May) and locations depend on the

dates
